KEY INFORMATION
This project is studying the nature and perceptions of collegiality among secondary social studies teachers, science teachers, and special education teachers. Collegial relationships in a school environment may range between people with whom you rarely have an opportunity to interact to people with whom you interact more frequently. In this study, we are interested in capturing what you believe is a good colleague in your interactions as part of your educational role. The purpose of the study is to better understand what good colleagueship is in terms of the collaborative behaviors demonstrated during the work of good colleagueship, the environment in which good colleagueship flourishes, and the cultural mindset that promotes good colleagueship in schools.
Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary. Your participation in this survey will take no more than 10 minutes and you may take as long as you need. More detailed information on the procedures can be found below. There are no risks to your health and well-being. One potential risk is that you will devote time to completing the survey and not find the experience meaningful at a personal level.
This is an anonymous survey. We invite you to share your responses to this survey for research purposes. Participation in this survey is completely voluntary. If you are willing to participate in this survey, click YES. If you select YES, you will proceed to the survey questions. If you select NO, you will exit the survey.
DETAILED INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION: The Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas supports the practice of protection for human subjects participating in research. The following information is provided for you to decide whether you wish to participate in the present study. You may refuse to participate in this study. You should be aware that even if you agree to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time. If you do withdraw from this study, it will not affect your relationship with this unit, the services it may provide to you, or the University of Kansas.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The work environment of teachers has long been characterized by isolation. Most teachers are separated from colleagues as they work alone in their classrooms with groups of academically diverse students. The purpose of the study is to better understand what good colleagueship is in terms of the collaborative behaviors demonstrated during the work of good colleagueship, the environment in which good colleagueship flourishes, and the cultural mindset that promotes good colleagueship in schools.
PROCEDURES After reading this Information Statement, you may decide to give consent to participate in the Qualtrics survey or decide to exit the survey. The survey is anonymous and should take you about 10 minutes to complete. Results from the survey will be stored on a password-protected KU server that requires two-factor authentication for access. Results from the study will be shared in a summary format. *It is possible, however, with internet communications, that through intent or accident someone other than the intended recipient may see your response.
RISKS There are no risks to your health and well-being. One potential risk is that you will devote time to completing the survey and not find the experience meaningful at a personal level.
BENEFITS There are no anticipated individual benefits to participating in the study, but there are societal benefits to allowing participant data to be shared for research purposes. Indirect potential benefits to society include sharing with other educators about your perceptions about collegiality among secondary science and social studies educators, characteristics and behaviors of good colleagues, and the benefits of colleagueship in schools, which may also be used for other school improvement efforts to the benefit of students.
PAYMENT TO PARTICIPANTS You will not receive payment for participation.
PARTICIPANT CONFIDENTIALITY Your name will not be associated in any publication or presentation with the information collected about you or with the research findings from this study. Surveys will be taken anonymously. All study results will be shared in aggregate. Data collected during the study will be analyzed and shared through conference presentations or publications within two years from the end of the study. By this time, data collected will be erased.
REFUSAL TO GIVE CONSENT AND AUTHORIZATION You are not required to participate in this survey. You may refuse to do so without affecting your right to any services you are receiving or may receive from the University of Kansas or to participate in any programs or events of the University of Kansas. Your alternative to participating in this research study is not to participate.
CANCELING THIS CONSENT AND AUTHORIZATION You may withdraw your consent to participate by exiting the survey at any time. Responses are only recorded and analyzed after clicking Submit at the end of the survey.
