The Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction is excited to announce our
2nd Annual Sturgeon Symposium
(Wed. 9/20 – Fri. 9/22/2023), celebrating the 30th anniversary of Octavia Butler's groundbreaking novel, The Parable of the Sower. As KU's choice for the 2023 Common Book program, this novel is a powerful inspiration for our Symposium's theme, "Fantastic Worlds, Fraught Futures." Tuesday night features a special collaborative event, the Feminist Futures Forum, with the KU Common Book and the Emily Taylor Center featuring Olaronke Akinmowo at the Jay (Kansas Union).
Free and open to the public, the Symposium features a Wednesday afternoon zine workshop with Olaronke Akinmowo, a Thursday afternoon young adult SF creative workshop with LL McKinney open to all, Noël Sturgeon's presentation of the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and reading by winner Samantha Mills on Thursday at 5:30, a Friday afternoon closing reception at the Spencer Art Museum to highlight the Common Work of Art, and a movie screening Friday night at the Union. The full conference begins Wednesday virtually and goes through Friday in person. Detailed schedule can be found at
